This is in NE India, state of Assam in the city of Guwahati. Help Animals India is very pleased to fund this ambulance to help India’s animals; so many of them are hit by cars and left to die on the streets if they are not picked up for treatment and care.

This ambulance is of JBF (Just Be Friendly) (www.trust.jbfsociety.org & www.facebook.com/JustBeFriendly) working hard in the far NE state of Assam – will be relied upon to rescue the distressed and suffering and also for ABC (animal birth control). See how your kind donations can really make a difference!

During the period of 6th February to 23th March 2012, we have spent time with the JBF India Trust team, and with Dr Gogoi, a large animal vet. Our work with JBF was a wonderful experience. We had the chance to be involved in the ABC (animal birth control) campaign, the friendliest and most efficient way to deal with rabish and protect both human and animal health. With the great help of Dr Shahjahan, we have castrated many dogs and improved our surgery skills. With Dr Gogoi, we had the chance to practice large animal medicine in the countryside. We saw a lot of different cases, from a train-accidented bull (In France, because cows are not wandered in the streets, it would have been impossible to see such a case.) to an abces on an elephant, a totally new experience.

What we will remember are few important differences between the two countries.

Animals could be contaminated by some diseases erradicated in France like rabbish. We learnt a lot about it in our classes but we never had the « chance » to see a rabbished animal. Also ,the vet uses ayurvedic medicine in complement to classic medicine, and we don’t use it in France.

During our training, we went to the agri fair at Guwahati, where we met different vets and students from the Guwahati vet school. Some days before leaving, the vet school organized a meeting where we meet a lot of students. We shared about our schools and programs then about opportunities to go learning abroad for vet students.

Back in France, we will use what we have learnt here. We shared a lot of experiences with all the vets we met. We compared the differences between our two ways of practice veterinary medicine and we will use this new knowledge to improve our own practice. It was an amazing experience for us and we hope next year, some other students could come to Assam and be involved in the incredible work of JBF Trust India.

We posted a request few days back for a Computer to replace 9 years old office Computer of JBF. We are again placing the same request as reminder because still there is a need and JBF is facing a lot of problems.
A new computer is costing Rs. 35000 to 40000 at most.

They wander around streets, scavenge for food in the garbage, sit on the roads, puts them at life-threatening injuries by accidents and whenever this speechless animals needs help, JBF (Just Be Friendly) always comes forward and ready to help them within their limit.

This is one of the abandoned bulls with a severe deep and old injury near its shoulder region, blood flowing to the ground like a stream. JBF team after giving the first aid care and management transported it to the place where it could get proper treatment and a place to stay with the help of other organization who have the transport vehicle.

JBF gives on the spot treatment and don’t have any static clinic to give in-house treatment and a space to provide them a shelter.

What can be more tragic for a mother who couldn’t fed her milk to her babies and what can be more unfortunate for the babies who had lost their mother at the time when they need their mother’s support for playing and learning. An incident happened last 8th December, 2011 near Christian Basti, near Dispur area when a mother dog with 6 pups had experienced an accident hitted by the vehicle while sleeping aside by the road. The dog was so unfortunate that a motor bike ran above her right forelimb when she was sleeping with her babies.

She had a serious injury in her limb with multiple fractures at the knee joint along with severe tearing of muscles. Though some people don’t bother by hitting an innocent animal, still there are many people among them who are much concern about animal welfare. A kind human being named Mr. Abhijit Kalita immediately inform JBF about the accident and had been brought to the ARC by himself for getting her recover. Our doctors immediately provided the animals with the necessary treatment. Though the animal was administered with the treatments, but she didn’t responded well and died after 2 days leaving alone her 6 pups. Team JBF looked after those unweaned pups but two of them passed away.

The positive side is that rest 4 pups were adopted!

The organization has an animal rescue shelter and animal birth control unit at the ALPCO campus in Panjabari in Guwahati. Senior officials from Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), Mukul Gogoi, Additional Commissioner, GMC and branch officer, Veterinary Department, Dr. Arun Sarma, designated officer, ABC programme and senior officer, GMC and Dr. Dilip Nath, Veterinary Assistant Surgeon, today inspected the centre to check the infrastructure of the organization and also to see if it fulfills the criteria set by Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI). Discussions on humane dogs and rabies management also took place later on. Apart from officials of GMC and JBF members, the meeting was also attended by a couple of JBF volunteers and two interns – Sylvain Hawawini and Alice Balard of Alfort Veterinary School (ENVA), France.

JBF also has an OPD unit that provides all types of treatment and vaccination for pet animals in Uttara Complex in Survey, Beltola. Guwahatians can reach out to the organization (helpline number-9954449528) for any accident related cases or for the treatment of sick stray dogs.

Since 2006, JBF is associated with National Institute of Animal Welfare (NIAW). Senior Programme Manager, Dr. Smriti was a permanent faculty and now associated as guest faculty. Dr. Sashanka, Chief Functionary of JBF is also associated with NIAW as visiting faculty on call since long back.

The team JBF at Delhi gives demonstration of the JBF Mobile Cattle Clinic to the trainee’s of Gaushala Management at NIAW on call whenever there is training for Gaushala trainees.

National Institute of Animal Welfare (NIAW) situated at Ballabhgarh, Haryana, in the NCT of Delhi which is a subordinate office of the Government of India under Ministry of Environment and Forests. With the mandate of promoting animal welfare in the country, Government of India conceived and established this national institute with the purpose of fostering knowledge and training to personnel’s working with animals in the state veterinary departments, municipal corporations, forensic labs, forestry departments, laboratories dealing with animal experimentation, sanctuaries, animal houses/ shelters, pharmaceuticals, diagnostic labs, nominees of Animal Welfare Board of India, CPCSEA members, SPCA members, institutional animal ethics committee, NGOs registered with Animal Welfare Board of India, students graduated in Veterinary and Animal Sciences, fisheries sciences, wild life sciences, biological sciences etc.

The 5th and 6th Dog Show was organized by the Kennel Club of Guwahati (Assam) under the Kennel Club of India on 4th December, 2011 (Sunday). The show was held in the Assam Engineering Institute playground in Chandmari. It was a cool and misty morning when all the participants accompanied by their masters reached the ground by 09:00 am for the registration.

Since it was a weekend, animal lovers (esp. canine-friendly ones) and people from the locality thronged the place more out of their enthusiasm to see the pedigree dogs- St Bernard, Boxer, Labrador, Pug (the Vodafone dog) etc. One could find all the bilayati breeds. Think of any pedigree dog and lo! You saw it!!! The only exception was Savera, a milky white bitch of the desi type with her roots down south in Tamil-Nadu.  It was a unique sight to see how well the dogs were groomed and trained, each dog responding to the command of their master. However, there were also a handful in the pack of dogs who were scared of the large gathering, camera shy and still some who played a symphony with their barks and howls.

While the fortunate pets have masters to look after them, the ones on the roads- the destitute dogs which is such a common sight for us, are never cared, forget about loving them. How often we see dogs and cats, goats and cows and all the 4-legged creatures, mowed down on the highways or in the busy streets of our city, how often we see dogs bleeding from infections and wounds. These creatures with just a little bit of care and love can be healed. They just need a helping hand from us . . .

Just Be Friendly exists to provide treatment to such injured street animals free of charge, to carry out Animal Birth Control Programmes in collaboration with Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), and also in providing free anti-rabies vaccines. This is only possible for the generous donation of those who cares about animals. There were people who came to see the show and when they passed by the stall of JBF there were some- both students and professionals, who donated for our cause. It doesn’t matter how much one donates- be it a 1 rupee or 10 or 100 or 500 or more, what matters is every rupee that you contribute will go in treating and healing the suffering animals. Dr Shahjahan Ali Ahmed, Dr Hrishilekh Kumar and Ratul Hazarika represented JBF on this day. Pamphlets and leaflets were distributed to the people- some who already knew about the good work being done by this organization and yet some who never heard about its existence. It was motivating for the volunteers to hear words of appreciation from a few persons.

Pedigree, the brand well-known in the market as a provider of nutritious dog food also participated in the show which was adjacent to the stall of JBF. Pet owners in large numbers lined up the Pedigree stall because 2 packets of pedigree were provided free to each of the prospective ‘future’ buyers. Out of the blue, a brown desi dog whose territory had been encroached on that day by other ‘well-behaved’ dogs, sniffed the existence of JBF and found temporary shelter for the day inside the stall.

The show went on till the evening and concluded with the prize distribution ceremony. JBF, by marking its presence in this show, helped in creating awareness about the plight of the city’s sick street animals and also in reaching out to the people to garner support by being the voice for the countless voiceless animals.
