A Tribute to Late Dr Bhupen Hazarika
Monday, November 21, 2011 0:23A person loved for his musical compositions which encompassed the lilt connecting the rivers of hope, of giving, of sharing amongst people . . . and which transcended the creations of man. . . Dr Bhupen Hazarika is to music what the mighty river Brahmaputra is to the people of Assam.
The legendary singer who was much admired by people from both within northeast India and outside had gained a much larger than life popularity through his songs. The folk songs with its roots here were given the wings to fly beyond the “mohabahu Brahmaputra” through his baritone voice.
On the day of this cremation, people from all walks of life thronged to Judges Field in Guwahati to bid adieu. His notes on the love for humanity, his thoughts for the common people is what pulled the crowd. There will not be another such figure in our times in Assam to whom people could connect.
Perhaps it is for this reason that apart from the sea of humanity today, as the jajabor took his last journey, 3-4 doves the symbol of love, peace, perseverance, gentleness, blessed and awakened his soul. It was queer considering the birds didn’t fly away from the vehicle in which his body was taken to Gauhati University, Jalukbari but was spotted even after his last rites were performed.
With his demise, Assam has not only lost a son but many a being lost their mentor and guide. His music will continue to inspire many for all times to come.
The “Chitabhasma”(ashes) of Bhupen da being immersed in Ganga at Haridwar today by representatives from Assam Association Delhi (Manoj Das, Sashanka, Deva, Bhargab & Bhabananda). Bhupen da – the epitome of excellence meets eternity. May his soul reach the abode of God in peace and tranquility.
